A New Standard for Healthcare Education
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially announced a significant transformation in the academic landscape for Allied and Healthcare professions. Beginning in the 2026-27 academic session, degrees in Master of Physiotherapy (M.PT) and Master of Occupational Therapy (M.OT) will no longer be awarded under generic titles. Instead, these programs will shift to a specialization-focused framework to better align with the rigorous demands of the clinical sector.

What Changes for M.PT and M.OT Students?
Under the new guidelines published in the Gazette of India on August 27, 2026, universities are required to update their curriculum and degree structures. The move is the fifth amendment to degree specifications since 2014 and brings these programs under the regulatory umbrella of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP).
- M.OT Specializations: Musculoskeletal Sciences, Pediatrics and Neonatology, Neurosciences, Mental Health, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Sciences, Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Hand, and Oncological Sciences.
- M.PT Specializations: Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neurosciences, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Sciences, Sports Sciences, Pediatrics and Neonatal Sciences, Obstetrics and Gynecology Sciences, Oncology Sciences, and Community Rehabilitation Sciences.
- Duration: Both master-level programs will maintain a minimum duration of two years post-bachelor degree.
Broader Reforms in Allied Healthcare
The mandate extends beyond Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The UGC has expanded its list of recognized allied healthcare degrees to include disciplines such as Medical Laboratory Science, Emergency Medical Technology, Anesthesia and Operation Theater Technology, and Health Information Management (B.Sc. HIM and M.Sc. HIM). This reflects a broader government effort to standardize the quality of training across medical support roles.
This notification is a major step forward in enhancing the academic identity, quality, and future of the Physiotherapy profession nationwide.

Impact on Current Students
Students currently enrolled in programs before the 2026-27 academic year can rest easy. The UGC has clarified that these new rules are not retrospective. Students already pursuing their studies will continue under the existing provisions and will not be required to switch to the new specialization-heavy format.
