A New Chapter for BRICS in India
The 18th BRICS Summit officially kicked off in New Delhi this week, marking India’s fourth time chairing the influential bloc. Under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the summit arrives at a critical juncture defined by economic fragmentation and geopolitical uncertainty.
The event, hosted at the Bharat Mandapam, follows a year of extensive diplomacy, including over 350 ministerial meetings held across 25 Indian cities. As nations grapple with climate change and resource pressures, the summit aims to solidify BRICS as a unified voice for the Global South.

Behind Closed Doors: The Modi-Putin Dialogue
A focal point of the summit was the 45-minute bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. The discussions underscored the strategic, long-standing relationship between India and Russia.
- A potential $100 billion annual trade target by 2030.
- Discussions regarding defense cooperation, specifically S-400 and BrahMos systems.
- Deepening energy partnerships to navigate current global energy crises.
- Ensuring the safety of Indian sailors operating in the Black Sea.
President Putin has also formally invited Prime Minister Modi to Russia for the 24th annual summit, an invitation that has been accepted, signaling continued high-level engagement between the two nations.
BRICS and the Global Economic Shift
Beyond bilateral talks, President Putin used the Business Forum to highlight the collective economic power of the bloc. He pointed out that BRICS members now represent over half of the world's population and have produced more than 40% of the world's GDP. Putin emphasized that these nations possess “dynamic, vibrant, domestic markets,” positioning the bloc as a direct alternative to the influence of the G-7.
The international system is experiencing economic fragmentation, technological disruption and geopolitical uncertainty. These interconnected challenges require cooperation that is inclusive, practical and responsive.
