A New Kind of DC Universe Story
James Gunn is officially taking the DC Universe into unexpected territory. Following the success and momentum of the recent 'Superman' film, HBO has greenlit 'The People v. Gorilla Grodd,' a unique spin-off series that trades traditional superhero action for a true-crime mockumentary format. The series will center on Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, as he attempts to document the inner workings of the Metropolis criminal justice system.

The Cast and Creative Vision
The series is being helmed by showrunners Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, known for their work on 'American Vandal,' which explains the show's stylistic pivot toward the mockumentary genre. Tony Yacenda is set to direct all eight episodes. Joining Skyler Gisondo in the cast is Jimmy Tatro, who will portray the iconic Gorilla Grodd.

- Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard
- Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant
- Wendell Pierce as Perry White
The production also features a deep bench of supporting talent, including Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. James Gunn and Peter Safran are serving as executive producers, ensuring the series maintains the tone and continuity of the broader DCU.
We’re excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries.

Why This Matters for the DCU
By focusing on secondary characters and exploring different genres, Gunn’s DCU is signaling a commitment to variety. 'The People v. Gorilla Grodd' represents a shift away from standard blockbuster narratives, allowing fans to see the Metropolis world through a grounded, albeit comedic, lens. It promises to flesh out the DCU by examining how everyday citizens—and notorious villains—interact within the justice system of a world filled with super-powered beings.
