A New Chapter for Hyrule
After decades of speculation, Nintendo is officially bringing the iconic The Legend of Zelda franchise to live-action. Directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the film promises to translate the magic of the Hylian kingdom into a cinematic experience. Fans have waited years for this announcement, and with a solid release date locked in, the hype is reaching a fever pitch.
The Faces of Link and Zelda
Nintendo officially revealed its two leads in an announcement from company legend Shigeru Miyamoto. The search for the protagonists concluded with two rising stars in the industry:
- Link: Played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his role in The Haunting of Bly Manor.
- Princess Zelda: Played by Bo Bragason, whose credits include the Disney+ series Renegade Nell.
By selecting up-and-coming talent rather than Hollywood heavyweights, Nintendo aims to allow audiences to see these iconic characters without the distraction of pre-existing celebrity personas.
A Bittersweet Contribution from Sam Neill
The production carries a heavy emotional weight, as it features one of the final performances by the legendary actor Sam Neill. Neill, who passed away in July 2026 at age 78, completed filming his role for the movie in April of that same year. While Nintendo has kept the details of his character under wraps, speculation among the fanbase points toward a potential role as the King of Hyrule.
I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.
— Shigeru Miyamoto
Looking Toward 2027
The Legend of Zelda is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 7, 2027. With filming having concluded in early 2026, the project is now deep into the post-production phase. As we approach the release window, audiences can expect more details regarding the plot and the official look of the kingdom of Hyrule.
